An example

Suppose you have the spreadsheet below:

It looks perfectly well written, but in fact it contains an error. One of the formulas (shown above) is different from those around it. But how would you tell? Using XLMapper, the spreadsheet looks like this:

Each type of cell is colored in a particular way. Cells that are copies of their neighbors are shown in grey. Those that are not are shown in green. You can instantly see that the cell in G12 looks wrong, and if you checked the formula you would see that it was. You can also see that there appears to be a problem with the text in column B. Some of the cost lines have been missed out (where is Cost 3 for example). This is the sort of error that is easy to miss when checking by hand.

XLMapper is designed to be flexible and to suit your needs. If you don't like the colors used above, you can change them. If you don't want XLMapper to make changes to your existing spreadsheet, tell it to automatically create an exact copy and make the changes to that. If you would rather have different types of cell marked using text than using color (because you want it to print easily) then tell XLMapper to do it that way. XLMapper will create a new book, with the same sheets as your existing book, and show you the structure in that. The example above would then look like this:

Again, you can see the two "F's" at G12 and H12, looking out of place.

You can also use this sort of report for error checking. Produce a map, using text, for your spreadsheet. Then check all the cells with a "F" carefully. If you do this checking properly, and all the "F" cells are correct, the copied cells should be correct as well.

To install, save the XLMapper installation file somewhere easily accessible, such as the desktop. Then double click on the file. You will be asked where you want to put the files - in most cases it is fine to accept the suggested directory. Click on "Unzip" to put the files in that directory, then click "Close" and delete the installation file.

Now open Excel and click "Tools - Addins". Click the "Browse" button and open the directory where you put XLMapper. Now select the xlmapper.xla file and click OK. You will be asked to agree to the licence agreement. XLMapper will then be installed, and a new menu will appear beside the Help menu in Excel.
