  • Importing : Importing from a scanner to excel

    Hello,

I have a problem with importing data to excel and making the data go to specific loacations.

Im using a wedge scanner plugged directly into my PC at work. Any data that I scan with the scanner will import directly into excel VIA Column A row 1, the a2, a3 ect.

Let me explain what I'm doing and what I need to do.

    What I'm doing::
I'm currently haveing to manually type in the following data to excel and then sort for reporting: Column A :Tech Number,Column B :System,Column C: Good/Bad, If bad then error. and so on. I will do this up to 5000 times in a week. This process is very time consuming and very outdated.

What I need to be doing::
I've made a series of barcodes that will represent: Tech Number, System, Good/Bad ect. I want to scan the barcode and have the data import directly to excel in specific columns for sorting. This would save:Paper, Time, Fingers

    The problem::
When I scan a barcode the data only populates to Column A and down A1,A2 ext.

Is there a way to make the data go to specific columns and when I go to a techs number again the data will populate to the next row and start over again?

I know this can be done, but how?

    Thanks for your time,

    Hi Jason,

    Welcome to the board

In general I would recommend You to check out some softwares (OminPro / TextBridge) which are available here:

Sounds to me as an excellent process to automate with the built-in programming tools VBA

Let us know what kind of support You need to get a VBA-solution.

For some years ago I made a solution for barcodes, i e converting them to readable text in XL but it was quite complex and when reading Your comments about it it looks like it is quite fixed with text and the evaluation of bad/good.

      Dennis,

Thank you for replying. Iíve looked into some automated document processing applications. These generally require paper to transfer to PC. I want to go straight from a wedge scanner to Excel or to notepad then import to excel.

      You mention VBA:
Let me elaborate on an idea.
Scan the Tech Number Barcode with a starting validation number say 0 is the identifying numeral then the tech number 2777----> Scan, 02777. The Marco or VBA control identifies the 0 in the string and says. Ah 0 goes to A1. Then make different identifying keys for the other barcodes. When we have finished with that techs information we scan an ending barcode which will say something like Return or 8return. This will end the row a1 and drop down to A2 on so on. Does that make sense?

        Hi,

I have a strong feeling that it will be difficult to get the "signal" from the scanner...

But I would like to see if is possible to first create a reliable solutions that works stepwise:

        1) Get the data into a worksheet
        2) Manipulate the data as You want to have it.

This is possible and will give a good start. Next You may challenge the scanner/XL-interface.

        OK?

        Kind regards,
        Dennis

          Ok,
The wedge scanner plugs into your PC via the keyboard. This works perfectly. Any application that can take keyboard entries will accept the scanners input. (Word, Access, Excel, Notepad and so on)

Here are the steps and results so far:
          1) Get the data into a worksheet

          A) Created barcodes that represent needed information.
          B) Can scan barcodes and the information imports to excel as scanned

Result: Data enters excel in order scanned in column A row 1-1000.

Problem: Data populates in a perfect column A and down, not across Column B, C, with a return to A2 when ready for next set of information.

          2) Manipulate the data as You want to have it.

Data in a single columnís cannot be sorted as needed. Excel requires more than one column heading for sorting or for Subtotalís

We need a command that can be coded in the spreadsheet that tells Excel when post data to Column A, B, C and also when to do a return to A2, A3 and so on.

Am I on the right track?

I really appreciate you working with me on this.

          Jason
