Microsoft Excel Software From AmazonMicrosoft and Microsoft Excel are registered trademarks of Microsoft Corporation. If you are considering upgrading, or perhaps buying for the first time, I strongly suggest going straight to 2002 (XP). I (Dave Hawley) have used Office, with Excel very heavily, since Excel 97. The move from 97 to 2000 was, in my opinion, a waste of money. However, the move from 2000 to 2002 was very much a pleasant surprise. If moving from 97, buying the full XP version is of even more benefit. Excel 2002 makes more of the existing functionality easier to discover and provides more intelligence to help assure users that they are not making mistakes. For the advanced users, Excel focuses on making common tasks easier and more intuitive. Excel 2002 is designed to make it easy for anyone to share data with others, connect to important data on the Web or within an organization, and analyze that data to make better decisions. Excel 2002 allows users to spend time analyzing their data rather than worrying about their software. For example, in the past, if an error were to occur, it was likely that the user would have had to spend a significant amount of time recreating their work. With the reliability features in Excel 2002, users can continue to work even in the unlikely event of an error. Furthermore, a variety of security enhancements have been included in Excel 2002 to help users feel more secure when working with their spreadsheets. Use the new error-checking smart tag to alert users via a smart tag of a possible error in a cell. Excel 2002 users can select a command to resolve the error, ignore it, or access further error-checking options. Function Argument Tooltips displays information about function arguments as users build a new formula. The tooltips also provide a quick path to Help. Simply click any function or argument name within the tooltip. Easily track results of multiple cells with the Watch Window, even while working on a different sheet or workbook. This prevents users from having to switch back and forth or scroll between sheets to keep track of important data. Easily dictate, navigate, and provide other commands using a microphone while working on their spreadsheets. Furthermore, Excel also supports text-to-speech, which enables Excel to read back values as part of checking a spreadsheet's contents. (Note: Speech is currently available for U.S. English, simplified Chinese, and Japanese.) Excel 2002 Upgrade Excel 2002 Upgrade Microsoft Office XP Professional Upgrade Microsoft Office XP's empowering document design tools, integration of Office XP Professional voice recognition functionality, and impressive network- and Web-based sourcing capabilities should be enough to convince those interested in saving time and consolidating effort to take the leap. In keeping with Microsoft's much-ballyhooed .NET strategy, Office XP introduces several features that utilize the vast infosphere inhabited by the 21st-century desk jockey. Smart tags beckon underneath recognized objects like misspellings or symbols, offering a stock quote here, a synonym there, or "Would anyone care to configure my auto-correction list?" The task pane looks similar to Microsoft Internet Explorer's Explorer Bar, and acts like an open tool chest pulled up alongside each application in the suite, providing readily configured searches for information or multimedia files. Putting up a team Web site that tracks projects and serves as an information hub requires only the use of one of the included templates, ready to be customized and uploaded to the server. The Send for Review feature further streamlines the collaborative process by allowing the sender to view revisions made by multiple parties within the framework of the original document. Outlook now features a color-coded calendar and easier meeting management, along with instant messaging and variable e-mail account access. All user system errors can be tracked globally, and then network security settings modified remotely while anti-virus and debugging IT resources are diverted accordingly. After firing up Microsoft Word, typing "Dear Somebody," and hitting the Enter key, we made a Start ling discovery. Up popped Clippy, Microsoft's publicly pink-slipped office assistant. Clippy might have aptly announced, "Rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated," but instead predictably observed, "It looks like you're writing a letter." Once the groans of disbelief had subsided, we quickly right-clicked and banished Clippy to the silicon ether, presumably forever. --Dominic Johnson--This review refers to Office XP Standard Edition

Excel@Middle Schoo l If you look at this multiple CD package from a value standpoint, it's a great deal. You're getting Excel at Middle School seven good quality, previously released programs that teach middle school skills and subjects, plus a central study program. It's this main study program that's the weak link, however. Kids sign in and then can choose or search for a specific topic to study. Then they can take a pretest if they want or go directly to the study pages. Pre and posttests are all multiple choice, and records are kept. So what's our beef? The study pages are extremely dry, practically devoid of graphics and multimedia. How can you teach science, for instance, without lush photographs and video? On the upside, content is plentiful and effectively covers algebra, grammar, reading comprehension, history, science and geography. The previously released programs included in the package are Math Blaster Algebra, Multimedia Workshop, Math Blaster Pre-Algebra, French for the Real World, Ultimate Word Attack, Spanish for the Real World and Ultimate Speed Reader.

Cruise ahead of your classmates in any subject you like with Excel @ Middle School. This comprehensive school-prep package won't replace the years you spend in the classroom, but it will make them easier. Four history sections as well as two math, three science, and three English sections cover pretty much everything you'll need to know to succeed in the years before high school. Start out by taking some tests to evaluate your strengths and weaknesses, then devise a study plan to follow for as long as you like. Switch back and forth between subjects or focus exclusively on one; either way, you'll improve your performance overall with the general tips and tricks that help you take tests and write papers better. The graphics are professional and, while not as fun or as far-out as popular video games, they won't distract from the lessons as you progress. Though there's a powerful multimedia encyclopedia included and Web links to help you with new material and ideas for projects, the lessons (especially in history) are surprisingly linear and don't take as much advantage of hypertext as other, similar packages. Still, the information is clearly presented and cohesive, with each self-contained lesson providing means for evaluating your comprehension and progress. The science and math lessons use graphics well to emphasize their points; the animated math tutor is especially helpful. With additional programs to help you read and type faster, build your own multimedia reports, and even pick up a bit of French and Spanish, Excel @ Middle School is a great deal for kids who want to continue learning outside the classroom. --Rob Lightner
