EPOS 4 Excel (An electronic point of sale system for Excel)

Over the last few months I have been working on creating a macro enabled Excel Worsheet that is an EPOS (Electronic Point of Sale) system. I have now completed the first version and released it opensource. You can download it from http://epos4excel.weebly.com. See the user manual on the website for more details. Thanks for sharing MPS1976 - well documented and well supported via forums and download links. Nice of you to highlight Aaron Bloods contribution too

Looks good really good .... except.... really sorry, but I have no idea how to "start" it. You should include instructions about unpacking the zip file and pointing users to the file that they need to launch. In your user guide, you get straight into "enabling macros", which is good - but I think you missed a few steps before that... sorry if this sounds awfully pedantic, but I've unpacked the files and cant find the any ".xls", or ".xlsm" in the the zip file to launch.

Did I miss something staggeringly obvious?

Thanks Ger. I will make the instructions a bit clearer on opening it. When you download the worksheet from the website (epos4excel_v1.0.xlsm) you should be able to open it just by double clicking on it and this should automatically open it in Excel (NOTE: you need excel 2007 or later already installed on the machine). Alternatively after opening excel use the menu file - open and select the worksheet file. I am not quite sure how you managed to unzip it!!

Additional Edit: I have now updated the information on the website and in user manual to reflect these instructions about how to open EPOS 4 Excel

Right, almost forgot about the IE 8 "undocumented feature". When you try to download ".xlsx" and ".xlsm" files from some webservers, the file that is downloaded will be saved with a .zip extension (the file is physically renamed by IE after download). It is discussed here: http://windowsnerd.com/2009/04/17/xl...e-in-explorer/ There is are some server side and client solutions discussed. But basically it doesnt happen on Firefox or chrome (checked it just now).

It doesnt matter whether winzip or winrar is installed on the machine AFAIK, as it is IE that physically renames the files to ".zip".

Might want to add something about in the User Guide about this...

You Also might want to mention about "Enable Content" message that pops up when you open the file in Excel.

I can't recreate your problem re: Zip files. Could you do me a favour and test whether this solution works so I know it will work for others?


Internet Explorer sometimes downloads an Excel file and changes the file extension to .zip and you won't be able to open the file in Excel. If this happens to you select 'save as' when you try to download the EPOS 4 Excel worksheet and change the 'save as file type' option to 'all files'. Then click save. This should solve the problem (see http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/of...wnload-as-zip/ for more details). Alternatively manually rename the file from epos4excel_v1.0.zip to epos4excel_v1.0.xlsm

Hi MArtin, unforunately the "Save As" with the "All File Types" did not work for me on IE 8, with Win 7 on 64 bit... though I dont think is an issue with the OS - almost definitely IE issue. It still saved it as a .zip file.

If i rename the file on the hard drive to .xlsm, then yes it opens as expected.
