If cell contains text then copy/paste text from a different cell

I am trying to build a formula that would say If cell contains text then copy/paste text from a different cell.

    For example:

I am writing my formula in cell I5. If there is any text in J5 then I want the text from J3 to appear in I5.

    Background:

-What I am doing is making an excel spread sheet for meeting notes.
-Column A has the project names.
-Column I is the date the project was last updated.
-Columns from J on, represent weeks. (Column J is for 1/1, Column K would be for 1/8, Column L would be for 1/15, etc.) The column heading (the cells in row 3) would be the date.

Each week, a new column is added (for a new week) and if there is any new information it is typed for that project for that week. If there is any new text in that week's column, I want the heading for the column (in my case the date for that week) to appear in Column I.

I hope this makes sense; please let me know if I need to clarify anything.

    Thank you,

    Laura

If there is any text in J5 then I want the text from J3 to appear in I5.
    And if there is numbers?
Is it not just to check if the cell is empty?
    Why not
    =IF(J5="",J3,J5)

That sort of does what I am looking for; however, I am not checking to see if the cell is empty, but rather checking to see if it has text.

In the example formula you provided, it pulls the text from J3 to I5, even though J5 was empty. I only want it pull the text from J3 if there is text in J5. If J5 is empty, I want I5 to remain empty. Does that make sense? Sorry I didn't make myself more clear. I tried tinkering with the formula you provided but I still couldn't get it to work the way I wanted.

    Thank you for your help.

What about this. if A1 is empty then A1 stays the same but if a1 has text then b1 = c1
    =IF(ISBLANK(A1),A1,C1)

=IF(ISBLANK(J5),H5,J3) this is specific to your needs

    Perhaps change I5 formula to
    =IF(J5="",J3,"")

Awesome; that does it! I was trying to use the "isblank" and "istext" functions, but I wasn't getting the last half of it correct. I will have to study this to figure out how it works, but that is what I was looking for!

Guys, All the formulas are OK. But there is a small detail that you did not took in consideration. The COPY and PASTE. So, the formulas that you mentioned above are to automatically show a value from a certain cell to another certain cell. This still does not mean that it will paste it.

Now, what I would need is the following:

in the cell L3 I have a value that it changes every day. In column B, I have the dates (obviously changing every day).

In column C, I would need a formula like this:

Cell C1 =If(B1=TODAY(),copy and paste the value from L3,""). Would you have a formula which I miss from here (the one in this format)?

It is very important to copy and paste it. As the next day (in cell B2 will be the next day), I need that in the C2 to appear the updated number from L3, which actually will do so. But, as B1 is not anymore =TODAY(), in C1 I will have "" (blank). That's why is very important to have paste it automatically. Otherwise I will have to do CTRL+C/CTRL+V manually, every day...

Thank you very much in advance!!!
